thanks for the report, not confirming, tried the same command and it works fine for me. this needs to be confirmed by someone else having the issue.

More info:

As the error comes from ping, I tried this:

$ ping -b 72.249.171.160
ping: invalid option -- 'b'
?: not implemented

So it should be coming from ping itself?
Can someone second that? What is the -b option? I don't see it in my "man ping" page.

this might be useful (both contains /bin/ping):

inetutils-ping:
  Installed : 2:1.5.dfsg.1-8ubuntu1
iputils-ping:
  Installed : (none)

Changed in gnome-nettool:
status: New → Invalid

Huh, why invalid already? we didn't figure out this bug comes only from ping. It could be a wrong dependency or sthg like that.

There's in fact a wrong depency: ping. This package doesn't exist.

It's a virtual package for
  inetutils-ping 2:1.5.dfsg.1-8ubuntu1
  iputils-ping 3:20071127-1
but which of them should be installed?

Ok launchpad is not making things great today, I did commented here, but anyways. This is not a gnome-nettool issue since ubuntu ship as default iputils-ping and not inetutils-ping which is why the program doesn't work, you can either submit a wishlist bug for inetutils-ping requesting the -b option or submit a new bug upstream (bugzilla.ngome.org) for gnome-nettool asking for compatibility with that program. thanks you.
