Bug Description

I have several problems (since the desktop effects are available for Intel GM965) with Compiz & the X.org Intel driver. If I use the full screen mode, i get graphical errors (for example in F-Spot), nothing is clickable or bad effects are displayed. The easiest way to see what appears is to view the video here:

Video: http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=2pria09&s=4
Mirror: http://www.file-upload.net/download-1262964/out-2.ogv.html

Sometimes everything freezes, if I use 3d applications like XMBC and view a video. I get no errors if I disable the desktop effects. The problem appears since Gutsy Gibbon.

The lspci-output is attached.

OS: Intrepid Ibex (with latest updates)
System: Toshiba Satellite P200 1E9

Now I've experied a real system freeze after starting Google Earth. It shows the same graphical errors which are shown in the videos above. Below you find the logfiles:

[This is an automatic notice.]

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:

Okay I've tested the newest driver 2.5.1 with Xorg 7.4 on Ubunt Intrepid Ibex. The issues are now for 90% solved, only if I use an application with a high number of frames or view movies in full screen mode, it jerks. So this issue should be solved, but then I think it's perfect.

If you need more information, please ask for it.

Thanks for testing, and great news that the new driver solved most of the issues. Would you mind also testing with the LiveCD, since it's possible that the DRI2 stuff in the new xserver helps resolve the remaining issue? If it doesn't, then we should report it upstream. Setting to Triaged for now.

Now I testing Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04 and I have the same performance issues. It *could* be the same problem as described in this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/303011

Moreover I have quite some graphical issues f.e. if I maximise a window or view images in fullscreen mode. But this problem is not always present, so it could be caused by the performance bug.

This is not necessarily a dupe of bug 303011 - that was sort of a generic performance sucks bug, which can be caused by a variety of things in -intel.

Anyway, since your last comment, there were a ton of performance changes in Jaunty since your last comment. Would you mind re-testing with the released Jaunty with all updates, and let us know if the jerking is still an issue?

Also, if you test Kubuntu as well as Ubuntu, another thing to try is to downgrade to an earlier stable version of Qt, as I understand the version included in Kubuntu has some issues in how it works with X.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
