Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I am running ubuntu 8.10 and NM 0.7 on a Dell inspiron 6000 and I connect to 3 UK mobile broadband with a external usb dongle Huawei E169G.

After a lost connection, when I try to reconnect Ubuntu hangs completely. The keyboard and mouse become irresponsive and the only solution is to reboot the machine.

Note that this result is not consistent but it happens approximately one out of five reconnection attempts.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

I recently received a new laptop (Dell Latitude E4300) and also in this case I have experienced freezes on reconnection.

I've experienced the same problem a couple of times with NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0.100 under Ubuntu 9.04.
I also have 3 UK mobile broadband, but with a Huawei E160G.
As reported by Emilio, my computer only hangs occasionally during reconnection attempts.

I have the same problem with an IBM Thinkpad R40 and a HUAWEI E630 PCMCIA modem.

Ubuntu hangs after trying to make a Mobile Broadband connection.
Completely hangs. The only way to recover is to turn the laptop off.

I have found that you can connect successfully by doing following.

1. Remove the modem from the pcmcia slot.
2. Turn the laptop on and wait for Ubuntu to complete booting.
3. Turn off wireless networking.
4. Turn off networking.
5. Insert the modem into the pcmcia slot.
6. Wait for Ubuntu to find the device and load the drivers.
7. Enable networking.
8. Wait for "NETWORK - You are now offline" message.
9. Select to connect to the broadband connection.
10. Wait for "GSM - You are now disconnected" message
11 Select to connect to the broadband connection again
12 You should get "GSM - Connection established" message.

Does this problem still occur with Ubuntu 12.04?
