When you boot into recovery mode, is the virtual console available? From there type # startx Then end X with the logout button and see if you are back on a virtual console or if the screen is black.

Before you leave graphical mode, try to insert fbcon and vesafb:

$ sudo modprobe fbcon vesafb

After inserting fbcon and vesafb also the same behavior is existing.

Bryce, do you have any knowledge about the problem with virtual console and this card:

lspci -knn: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07)

Torsten: No knowledge of vt switching issues with 8086:2a42. Test with -vesa to see if it's specific to -intel. If so, upstream git for -intel has a number of GM45 commits; you should test git head to see if a fix exists; if not make a public bug and we can forward upstream. You'll want libdrm from my people page.

Hariharan, please force the driver to be vesa and see if this resolves the issue.

How to force the driver to be vesa?

Torsten Spindler (tspindler) wrote :

You need to add the driver to xorg.conf. There should be a section 'Device' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, there add the line 'Driver vesa'.
