Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

The Dell 5530 integrated 3G card is detected by NetworkManager, it displays 3 available connections after configuration, but neither of them connect.

I've been able to get the card working on a stock Ubuntu Intrepid (2.6.17-7) kernel with a wvdial.conf script. I'd rather be able to use network manager for obvious reasons.

I refer to a thread in the ubuntu forums which contains the AT commands to get the modem up and running on.

Ubuntu Release:
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

network-manager:
  Installed: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I expect the mobile broadband modem to connect after configuration.

It does not connect after configuration - no message explaining why either.

Same Issue for IBM Thinkpads which uses the same 3G Card. It would be useful i there is an solution adding AT+CFUN=1
to the init script. Currently there is no way to do so, isn't it?

I reproduced the problem with my Dell 5530 card. The three auto-generated options produce a slightly different output, so I clicked them one after another. I'll attach the syslog, nm-serial-log and a working wvdial.conf (first "on", then "connect").

I confirm this issue does also occur on ThinkPad T400 bundled with Vodafone broadband package. The laptop is equipped with Ericsson F3507G Broadband Module (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ericsson_F3507g_Mobile_Broadband_Module).

Simply, I can connect manually, by configuring and calling wvdial, however Network Manager can not "see" such connection and does not setup itself to online mode. So, Firefox states it's offline (interesting thing is that Thunderbird is online without problems).

Unfortunately, I'm unable to offer any help in fixing this myself. However, if there is a hacker in London area, I'm willing to offer my ThinkPad T400 + good dinner & drinks for testing and fixing this issue. If there is anyone, feel free to drop me a message.

I'm also a T400 owner, with the danish provider Sonofon.

Same story, configured wvdial manually. I usually use vpn (cisco and others) via networkmanager. I'm not capable to set vpn up with the connection enabled with wvdial.

My wvdial.conf:

[Dialer Defaults]
New PPPD = yes
Stupid Mode = 1
Modem Type = USB Modem

#[Dialer PIN]
#Init1 = AT+CPIN=

[Dialer signal]

Init2 = AT+COPS?

[Dialer gps]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB2
Init1 = AT*E2GPSCTL=1,2,1
Init2 = AT*E2GPSNPD

[Dialer on]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB10
Init1 = AT+CFUN=1

[Dialer off]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB10
Init1 = AT+CFUN=4

[Dialer connect]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB4

I have just upgraded to Alpha 6 of Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) on my ThinkPad T400 and the problem has disappeared. Meaning, it's been fixed. The Network Manager can connect with Vodafone UK broadband and all applications are online.

I'm having a different behavior: my connections SOMETIMES work direct via Network Manager, mostly of the times not.

The syslog output for a working and not-working sessions is exactly the same. In both cases it activates the modem, finds the carrier, uses ppp and finally gets a valid IP, this IP can even be tracerouted from another network in both cases, but I can't ping any site, even by IP (not a DNS issue et all).

I read in a forum that another card was having the same behavior, the user solved the problem sending a modem-reset AT command, that is AT&F in 5530 (instead of the usual ATZ). Does anyone think the same trick can work here?

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Beta (from Mar/29) on a Dell Mini 9 (Dell 5530).

Hi,

this bug is not fixed yet. Not for me. :-(

PC: Dell Latitude E6400
Device: 5530 UMTS Card
Provider: t-mobile (de)

Trying to connect, takes 15 seconds. thereafter network manager shows message that connection was canceled.

I attach the nm-serial.txt. The last lines is the connection try.

Please have a look at it again, and hopefully tell me what's going wrong with this.

Thanks
Tobias

Freshly installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 Karmic on a Dell Mini 10 (Inspiron 1010) that came with Dell 5530 HSDPA Card.

Network Manager detected the card, shows the carrier, but can't connect. I have also tried to configure wvdial manually but no success, the modem keeps telling that I'm sending bad strings to it. Gnome-PPP also doesn't works, neither the official Vodafone Mobile Connect Driver!

The modem shows up and detected everywhere, but nothing can initialize it.

Greetings, I am having the same exact problem as every user above my post. Network Manager sees "New GSM conncetion", and it walks me thru the setup for AT&T LaptopConnect (using 'broadband' as the APN). But it never ever connects successfully. I have tried this on Ubuntu 12.04, and now I am even trying it on Ubuntu 13.04. This just does NOT work. I have the Dell 5530 Mobile Broadband card. I have gone thru all the steps for troubleshooting the network card. I am at a loss as to what the next steps are. I have created a *.doc file which contains all the outputs for the different test commands I have run. I will attach it here. Assistance is badly needed here. I am considering rolling out Ubuntu to all of the project managers at my company....roughly 40 laptops. But they ALL have this internal mobile broadband card. Without a fix, I will have to settle on Windows8, and not too happy with that as a solution either.
