Bug Description

Binary package hint: samba

Problem Type: package
Architecture: i386
Date: Mon Oct 17 2008
Distrorelease: openGEU
Error Message: None computer 'hangs'
Package: winbind 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.7
uname: Linux 2.6.24-21-generic i686

I updated my system last week with synaptic, i was then told a reboot was required but i did not do that until today. After the reboot my pc would hang on the splash screen. I had some course work on my pc which i had to get to. So booted with quiet taken out of the boot line and saw that the samba daemon was not starting just hanging. I then started in recovery mode and typed 'apt-get remove samba'. Next time it was the winbind daemon which was hanging, so recovery mode and typed 'apt-get remove winbind' which also took wine with it. The next boot i got to my desktop and my course work. After backing up my coursework i tryed to install wine with 'sudo apt-get install wine'. This worked, in that wine works but the winbind daemon will not start during the installation.
This is what happens now when i type 'sudo apt-get upgrade':

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
2 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 0B of additional disk space will be used.

Setting up winbind (3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.7) ...

This is after i press ctrl-c to stop the hang:

* Starting the Winbind daemon winbind
 dpkg: error processing winbind (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Interrupt)
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of wine:
 wine depends on winbind; however:
Package winbind is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing wine (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 winbind
 wine

'sudo dpkg --configure -a' produces much the same

This is my first bug report so if there's any more information i can give you i'd be happy to.

Thanks for your time

I solved this issue. I had to reinstall all the samba components except libsmbclient and it all worked fine.
I was going to delete this bug but couldn't figure out how to.
