synaptic update fails

Binary package hint: synaptic

First time this happened was synaptic update
Terminal screen showed:
 /etc/skel/.wine/dosdevices/z:/lib/udev/devices/fd/3 -- permission denied
then goes into infinite loop scrolling over and over
Now synaptic doesn't work at all and has same problem

Last successful update on 11/11/08:
Upgraded the following packages:
