Bug Description
One of the recent kernel updates (I believe it was the Nov. 6 one) made the wireless adapter become nonfunctional and undetectable on 8.04. Updated to 8.10, problem persisted, also didn't work with 8.10 liveCD. Fixed by apt-get install linux-backports

Can you comment which kernel version in Hardy you updated from and which kernel you updated to? Additionally knowing which kernel version you are running in Intrepid would help as well? You should be able to 'cat /proc/version_ signature' to find the specific version.
Additionally you mention this issue is resolved after installing linux-backports -modules- intrepid. This is likely because linux-backports -modules- intrepid has an updated version of the compat-wireless stack which is hoped to help resolve some issue users may have with the version provided in the default kernel package. So basically, if linux-backports -modules- intrepid resolves this issue you should continue to use that package. Thanks.
