Bug Description

Binary package hint: kwin

Kubuntu 8.10
Kde 4.1.3 (and Kde 4.1.2 on different machines)

After entering username and pwd the KDE screen loads. It hangs on the last symbol. The screen flickers every 2 seconds, but nothing else happens.
When switching to terminal 1 (ctrg-alt-1) and back to Xorg (ctrg-alt-7). The following error occures.
It appears on different nvidia machines. This Bug makes KDE4 UNSUSABLE, oi you do not the "workaround" switching to terminal 1 and back to xorg in terminal 7!

Anwendung: KWin (kwin), Signal SIGSEGV

Could you install kdebase-workspace-dbg and get a new backtrace please? Thanks.

I installed the nvidia 180.06 driver which solves this issue on my notebook (quadro 140)
It was installed via the *.run file. Therefore I dont know how to remove it again.

Furthermore KDE4 runs much more fluently now. Especially the minimize and maximize effects.
(Unfortinally this broke my suspend to ram....)

Iam currently on a travel, therefore i have no acces to the other nvidia pc.
I think its Nvidia related.

Hi hir-i-mogul-gmail,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

I had a similar problem (only I didn't need to switch to the terminal, and the stacktrace was slightly different), but try disabling the "Blur" effect under System Settings / Desktop / Desktop Effects (All Effects). It worked for me.

In Jaunty (9.04), we are dropping the nvidia-graphics-drivers-177 package, which
is now superseded by then nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package.

  http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180

To transition your bug into the new package, we need your help. Please do the following:

 a. Verify the bug occurs in Jaunty with the -180 driver
     (ISOs: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/)
 b. If you haven't already, please include in the bug:
     * Your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
     * Your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
     * The output of `lspci -vvnn`
     * Steps to reproduce the issue
 c. Under Affects, click the down arrow to the left of 'nvidia-graphics-drivers-177'
 d. Edit the Package to change 'nvidia-graphics-drivers-177' to 'nvidia-graphics-drivers-180'
 e. Click Save Changes

Thank you!

[We'll expire the remaining -177 bugs in a month or so.]
