Bug Description

I just installed a clean version of kubuntu 8.10 on my new desktop. Every time I booted the system, I couldn't see anything in graphical desktop (KDE), and my monitor kept saying "No Signal". I could, however, go directly to the shell (by Alt + Ctrl + F1) and login. I did some search on ubuntu forums and found out that the problem is with my ATI Radeon 2400 HD graphic card. So I followed the instructions on this wiki page <http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Intrepid_Installation_Guide> by installing xorg-driver-fglrx, and then I could run my graphical desktop this time. Now everything is fine and the graphics seems smooth and clear, though the only problem is that the graphic is quite slow. For instance, when I try to move a window through desktop, or scrolling through a long document or webpage, the screen is being updated like every half a second. My guess is that there might be something wrong with xorg.conf, so I attached it below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi dabirmoghaddam,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Thanks. In your Xorg.0.log it indicates that 3D acceleration isn't working:

(II) fglrx(0): driver needs X.org 1.4.x.y with x.y >= 99.906
(II) fglrx(0): detected X.org 7.4.2.0
(EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed, GPS not been initialized.
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *
(WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *

What version of fglrx-installer do you have installed? It sounds like you're using an incorrect version of -fglrx.

I don't know how I can figure out the exact version of the installed fglrx-installer, though I checked the version of the module "xorg-driver-fglrx" in the Adept Manager, and it was 2:8.543-0Ubuntu4. Thanks.
