Bug Description

Issue
I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 from LiveCD "Alternate".
In a few words. Any type of action that I take using either my CD or DVD ROM (2 separate units) will freeze my system.

Computer components:

    * MoBo: ECS EliteGroup K7VMM+
    * Chipset: Via KM266 & VT8235
    * Processor: 1.7GHz
    * HD: Western Digital 40GB
    * RAM: 2GB

Il DVD is MSI 16xDVD-Rom | 48 CDRom

Il CDROM generic CD | CDRW 48x16x48

I tried the following command: cat /etc/fstab

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=f4646d67-5ded-49f9-9e33-6fe80f2541d9 / ext3 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/sda5
UUID=f454a54d-5257-418e-bbf8-e42ec4437058 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

And then this one:
dmesg | grep -i cd-rom

[ 4.865243] scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROM MSI CD-RW MS-8348 150D PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
[ 4.865832] scsi 1:0:1:0: CD-ROM DVD-ROM 1.07 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

[ 5.103569] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
[ 5.105956] sr 1:0:1:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1

I do not see any issue.

Expected results
I would like to be able to use my peripherals :-)

Thanks for your feedback.

I have a similar problem with a Uniwill N251C1 Notebook. The System simply Freezes after some time while reading data from a DVD/CD.
I tried to install several Linux Distributions. Ubuntu 8.10, Fedora 10 (preview) and Fedora 9 all freezes during the Installation from CD/DVD. Ubuntu 7.04 installs and runs without problems.
I Guess that this has something to du with the switch to libATA.
Finally i installed Ubuntu 8.10 from the Network and try to avoid using the optical drive.

Hi,

The issue is not regarding the installation.
I do not have any problem in installing from a CD.
The issue appears after the installation.
Trying to use either the CD or DVD ROM will halt my system and forces me to reboot.

I hope this helps.

Thanks.

Ron

@ ronux

I would like to note that I just preformed an Ubuntu 9.04 installation on an Elitegroup ECS K7VMM+ and there was a bug and a workaround.

Bug: Ubiquity stops at 22%, mouse freezes, system unresponsive (LiveCD 32-bit)
Workaround: Used alternate (text) installer

If anyone with this motherboard can confirm this, it would be helpful.
