Hi,
the following bugs have been reported by me due to a fresh install of ubuntu 8.10 on a new computer: 270327, 296949, 297763, 297766. This install is continuously producing corrupted file errors when downloading files. I have ruled out (onboard forcedeth) network card failure by using a different network card (PCI). I have replaced the hard disk but errors persist.
I have tried both 32bit and amd64 versions of ubuntu 8.10, both resluting in the same errors. Out of desperation I installed Windows XP, which does not show errors at all, neither does Opensuse 11.
Here are the specs of the GIGABYTE GA-M56S-S3 motherboard:(http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2607)
It also has:
1 AMD Athlon 64 x2 2000
1 KINGSTON DDR2 2 GB @ 667MHZ
1 NVIDIA GEFORCE PCI- EXPRESS FX 8400GS 512MB
1 SEAGATE 320GB SATA 3,5” 8MB 7200

I cannot provide any more information right now.

Sorry for my late reply. Just a long shot, are you behind a proxy, any old network equipment ( dsl router, ...) ?

I am connecting directly from a ADSL router, which has been replaced since I first posted this bug. I have discarded the router as the source of the problem because the same thing happens connecting from a different place.
Right now I am using Fedora 10 (temporarily, I am still a Ubuntu fan) and I am not having trouble updating.

The corrupted archive might come from a broken drive, faulty memory or network failure during transfer.

Your drive looks good since you're running Fedora without a glitch. If Ubuntu is running on another partition you can check it with fsck.

Check your memory with the memtest86+ boot menu.

If your network hardware looks good then check the configuration. Once you're back to Ubuntu could you check if one of the following helps:
1) remove the option interface-mtu in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
2) lower the mtu : sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1000

Could you also provide the output of the following command in fedora:
ifconfig

Thanks.

Hi, sorry for the long delay. I've been too bus to try this out.
I'm writing this from a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10
I've done the two steps you mentioned, my current ifconfig output is:

The shown MAC Address is the same as in Fedora 10 (I've seen some posts about the forcedeth driver showing inverse MAC addresses)
I will attach the ifconfig output of fedora as soon as I log back in.

I failed to mention that after applying the lower mtu and checking the memory with the memtest86+ for over 4 hours without any problem being reported, I am still having the same problem when downloading packages. Maybe it's absurd, but I thought I'd mention this: when I update small packages with synaptic (under 1 MB) all seems to go fine; they download, uncompress and install OK. When updating larger packages (over 1 MB) or when the total size of the packages is larger than that, that's when I start having the corruption problems.
I have found other people reporting trouble with their GA-M56S-S3 boards, especially related to the MAC address being reversed or changed at every boot (forcedeth driver related) but that's not my case. The only difference, as can be seen further up this thread, is that Fedora's ifconfig reports the MAC address in uppercase and ubuntu in lowercase.
Are there maybe any BIOS settings I can try?
Any other ideas?
Thanks,

I am also facing the same problem. This happens on the livecd too. So I am almost sure it is a problem with the forcedeth network driver. Please fix this or give me some workarounds.

After rebooting with the 0.62 version of forcedeth it seems to work. Will confirm after doing more tests.

I have to correct my statement above. Even 0.62 version does not work. Ubuntu is unusable on this hardware.

If there is someone who can reproduce this behavior (livecd is fine) that a package is downloaded, but can then not be installed because of tarfile corruption. I would love to get the output of a terminal for:

$ sudo apt-get install -o Debug::pkgAcquire::Auth=true 2vcard
(please replace "2vcard" with any package that fails).
