Bug Description
Ubuntu 8.10.
HP Compaq nc8230 lpaptop has no mouse, keyboard (i.e. built-in devices) in intial X session after boot.
The X log at boot shows that the server can't find them initially.
/etc/init.d/gdm restart fixes the problem.
The X log at this point shows that the server finds them.
This is 100% repeatable. Restarting gdm is required after every boot.
The only non-default gdm setting is auto login.

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
Also, the typical case where keyboard/mouse don't work is because hal wasn't running. Check if hald is running or not when X starts. I'll bet that's what the problem is.
