glossaries package not included with texlive

Altough it is stated to be with texlive by CTAN, glossaries package is not included when I install texlive under XUbuntu 8.10. When compiling a file including the command \usepackage{glossaries} I get the error:
! LaTeX Error: File `glossaries.sty' not found.

Exactly the same file compiles fine using TeXnicCenter and Miktex under Windows XP.

At first I tried to find an ubuntu package that includes the latex package via synaptic. As this was not successful I installed the complete texlive distribution "texlive-full". However it was nowhere inside and I still got the error that the package was not available.

So I tried to install the package manually by copying it to "/usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex" and "~/texmf/tex/latex" and running sudo texhash. This did not work either.

I think there should be an ubuntu package including this latex package so it is installabel using synaptic.

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
4. the specific name of the package you installed and the version of the package (which you can find using apt-cache policy PACKAGE_NAME in a terminal

Thanks for replying, but can you give the version of the package also? You can find the version using apt-cache policy PACKAGE_NAME in a terminal and copying the results and pasting in a comment here.

Same here. The tex-package "glossary" is in the base distribution but it was marked as obsolete. It is replaced by "glossaries" according to this source: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/glossaries/#jhe4eb329834da3d36278b1b7d943b3bc9

Error description:

pdflatex: "glossaries.sty" not found
(pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.3 (Web2C 7.5.6))

locate does not find glossaries.sty, so I think it is simply not included.

the ubuntu "glosstex" package however, seems to close this loophole at least functionality wise.
However, since "glossar" is obsolete now, it would seem prudent to include the new "glossaries" package in the texlive distribution.

Shouldn't the tex-package "glossaries" also belong to the package "texlive-latex-extra"?

I agree with Holger. glossaries should be part of the "texlive-latex-extra" packet. I guess glossaries is a kind of "advanced" latex and belongs more to extra than base. It also would be good to have the old version (glossary) and the new (glossaries) in one package.

glossaries depends on the latex package xfor http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/xfor/ which is not included in my texlive-latex-extra (2007.dfsg.8-1ubuntu1) or base (2007-dfsg.1-5) installation. It would make sense to also include xfor in texlive-latex-extra.

And it will be in the packages of TL 2009.

If some Ubuntu guys could help testing, there are preliminary packages
available at
 deb http://people.debian.org/~preining/TeX/ tl2009-pre/
 deb-src http://people.debian.org/~preining/TeX/ tl2009-pre/
that would help a lot for getting it real soon.

The preliminary packages do not permit an easy install of texlive-full in Ubuntu karmic because it depends on context and context in turn depens on tex-gyre which is not going to be installed because it's nowhere in the Ubuntu repositories, only debian sid has it.

It appears that glossaries.sty exists in texlive-latex-extra in Lucid, Precise, Quantal, and Raring [1]. Can you please try installing that package in one of the currently-supported Ubuntu versions and seeing if it fixes your issue?
