Bug Description

Acer Travelmate 4100WLMi (Spec at http://surrey.lug.org.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?TravelMate4100WLMi ) can run Breezy if it is an upgrade from Hoary but not as a fresh install.

I put in a brand new HD to the machine then installed Windows XP Home in a single NTFS partition taking up 20-odd Gig of disc space. I then tried to install Breezy. The parameter "noapic" is needed to get any Hoary or Breezy disc to boot and was used. The installer started and displayed the "Choose Language" screen at which point the machine locked solid. The problem is repeatable and happens every time.

I checked the MD5 sum of the image and burned another disc which showed identical symptoms. The Hoary installer booted fine so this is something that has changed.

If this is truly a hang, it should be reassigned to linux-source-2.6.15.

If the problem is that the keyboard isn't working, it's less clear where the problem might lie.

Please test Dapper Flight 6 or later and tell us if the problem persists. If so, and it is a hang, try https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSystemCrash

The original crash passes my (probably out of date) crash test which is that pressing the caps lock key does not cause the caps lock light to illuminate.

With Hoary the boot option "noapic" is required to stop the boot process hanging.

With Breezy the installer runs with the boot options "noapic nolapic acpi=off vga=771 pci=noacpi" needed to prevent the lockup as described in this bug. After installation the GRUB config file can be edited to remove all the above options except "noapic" and everything still works.

I did not install Dapper but the Flight 6 install disc booted fine with only "noapic" and I was able to choose language and keyboard etc.

Thanks,
Paul.

Hi,

Sorry to keep you waiting. I just posted the following to this bug:
The original crash passes my (probably out of date) crash test which is that pressing the caps lock key does not cause the caps lock light to illuminate.
With Hoary the boot option "noapic" is required to stop the boot process hanging.
With Breezy the installer runs with the boot options "noapic nolapic acpi=off vga=771 pci=noacpi" needed to prevent the lockup as described in this bug. After installation the GRUB config file can be edited to remove all the above options except "noapic" and everything still works.

I'm emailing as your name doesn't appear on the subscribers list. Are there any more tests you would like me to run?

Thanks,
Paul.
