Bug Description
Binary package hint: emacs22
The bug 23005 for emacs21 also exists in Intrepid:
a ~5sec delay in poll on the X11 file descriptor
either removing custom-set-faces from my .emacs file or this workaround by John Steele Scott (introduced with bug 23005)

solves the problem.
Concluding I may say that Metacity is a major pain in the ass.
