pidgin ends (instead of minimizing) when closing buddy list

Binary package hint: pidgin

upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid and the Fast User Switching Agent (FUSA) is showing my Pidgin status, but if I close the Buddy List, Pidgin quits and I'm logged out. Have to keep the buddy list open all the time to stay logged in.
On another machine, the Pidgin icon is to the left (and duplicates the status of the FUSA), and when I close the Buddy List the application does not close. According to gdb, the "program exited normally."

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

Confirmed. This is extremely annoying as the icon in the tray is now gone by default. This really needs to minimise to the notification panel (particularly as pidgin has a bad habit of appearing on all desktops, which i'm sure is a separate bug).

Confirmed with a new pidgin config, and a dist-upgraded config.
