Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

Using Kubuntu 8.10 in a VirtualBox VM.

Via System Settings > Desktop > Desktop Effects:
 Checked "Enable desktop effects"
 Unchecked all effects
 Clicked Apply

This resulted in a white screen. I could get back to the login screen from a restart, but logging in still results in the white screen again.

Let me know what I can do to help.

Same behavior on X86 machine (HP 7800p, LCD 1280x1024, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT).

I think is a KDE 4.2 issue.

I have a similar problem: When I attach (via D-Sub) display to my laptop (GeForce 8400M GS) it switches off the desktop effects and when I switch them on, the screen gets white. It used to work even with the effects.
