Bug Description

After upgrading to 8.10, suspending with a mounted mmc block device, such as /dev/mmcblk0p1, frequently results in the suspend failing and a kernel oops that prevents further suspends or automatic powering off of the system.

Lenovo Thinkpad T61p
Linux thinkpad 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:20 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Attached is the dmesg output after one such problem suspend.

The attached /etc/pm/sleep.d/ script helps to work around the problem. Since starting to use this script the problem seems to be completely corrected.

Hi Jamin,

Care to test and confirm if this issue remains with the most recent pre-release of Jaunty 9.04 (currently Alpha4) - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . It contains a newer 2.6.28 based kernel. You should be able to test suspend via a LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Just tested with Alpha 4, first issue is that the live session does not support my laptop's trackpad.

As for the suspend testing, I tried three different ways with varying end results, but none resulted in a successful suspend and resume.

#1 - Booted with the SD card inserted. Attempted to suspend the system and the laptop hung in the process of suspending with a flashing moon (normally flashes while spending and then solid once suspended). At this point nothing I tried short of holding the power button had any effect.

#2 - Booted without the SD card inserted and did not insert it prior to attempting suspend. Unit appeared to suspend correctly, achieving a solid moon indicator. However, resume never achieved an active display, though the system did appear to go through the motions with the exception of the display.

#3 - Booted without the SD card and then inserted once on the desktop. Same results as #1.

At this point 9.04 would seem to be an overall regression in suspend functionality.

This bug is most certainly still present. Tested with 10.04 beta 1 i386 ISO and can suspend fine provided the SD card is not mounted in the MMC reader. If it is mounted suspend fails just as before.

I can confirm this bug as well, with Lucid RC installed. I have actually been suffering from this since early in the Karmic cycle. Only spending a little time trying to debug, never noticed it was linked to having a mounted SD card. I didn't really dig deeper until my wife's lucid install started to fail to suspend. So I have reproduced this on 2 laptops now, both with built-in SD cards. Ejecting the SD card before suspending works great.
