Multiple entries in 'Open With' and 'Open With Other Application'

Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Recently when I right clicked on a media file there were two entries for VLC in the menu which appeared (only one of which worked).

When I selected the 'Open With Other Application', there were seven instances of VLC, only one of which worked (the others said 'Could not find 'wxvlc').

There were also three instances of Text Editor, and two of Amarok and Firefox.

Thanks to some help I got at the Ubuntu forum, I managed to remove the duplicate entry from 'Open With', but the multiple entries for various programs remain in 'Open With Other Application'.

It seems that when some programs are updated, an entry in 'Open With Other Application' and (in the case of VLC) 'Open With' is duplicated.

Ubuntu 8.10 (Updated 7.10>8.04)
Nautilus 1:2.24.1

Thanks to bscbrit on the Ubuntu forum. Thread here with screen shots:

Do you see a bunch of extra .desktop files in ~/.local/share/applications ?

Yeah, I have the same problem. I have lots of .desktop entries in there for file formats I used "Open With..." on. I'm not sure if this has been fixed and the files are still hanging around or if it's a continuing problem.

I deleted all but the most recent entry for VLC (and Text Editor too) and that has tidied up my 'Open With Other Application' list.

Thanks!

Well, each one is mapped to a different MIME type that you opened manually, but I don't know why it would create separate files for each. Seems like it should just create one file and update it as you open more types.
