Bug Description

clean installation of ubuntu 8.10 on acer aspire 5530g
udevd takes about 3-5 % of cpu, but increases to over 50% (after hour or so)

I have tried following:
removed ATI binary drivers
removed ath5k from linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-7-generic
(now I have none binary drivers loaded)

log files /var/log/* doesn't contain anything udev specific

udevmonitor shows tons of these messages each second:

udevmonitor will print the received events for:
UDEV the event which udev sends out after rule processing
UEVENT the kernel uevent

Hi Kreso,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 295148

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

We are seeing udevd high cpu usage from the last couple of days.
It is consistently 30% to 70%, generally hovering around 60%. It seems to change whenever an application is
started or stopped but always returns to about 50-60%.

uname -a
Linux falcon 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

I have also attached output from sudo lshw
