Pressing "Configure" button in gnome-netstatus-applet leads to an error message "Interface is unavailable. Be sure that the imputed value is correct"

I get "The interface does not exist. Check that it is correctly typed and that it is correctly supported by your system." It happens no matter which interface I select, eth0 or what have you. Is someone sleeping at the wheel?
