Rendering of Desktop icons very slow

Bug Description

When I switch virtual desktops or minimize an application which was previously maximized, it takes nautilus 1.5seconds to render the desktop icons. It renders the background immediately, but the virtual desktops dialog which shows in the middle of the screen is shown during the delay.

This is on a 2Ghz laptop.

As a side note, Resizing windows is also slow, there is a noticeable(.5s) delay for about every 200px of the deskop that is revealed.

Also, if I run 'top' in a terminal and then resize the terminal, I notice that the CPU useage of Xorg jumps to 84-90%, so this may be a bug in the Xorg server somewhere. Because I'm unsure, I've filed it here.

Although I know how to build and run a debug version of the nautilus package, i'm unsure on how to catch it in the middle of this delay to see what is delaying it so much. Any pointers on this would be appreciated.

Thanks for your bug. That's a known cairo/xorg issue

This is more than likely the same bug as https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/27919

I have this problem (or a very similar one) on my desktop at home (but not on any other system I've installed dapper on) on a computer with an Nvidia card, using the "nv" driver. The original reporter of bug 27919 reported that he was using the "nv" driver as well. If this bug is actually in cairo, I'm not sure if the "nv" driver could have anything to do with it (I don't understand enough about cario/X-server/video is what I mean), but... Lakin, were you using the "nv" driver for X?

No, I was using the fglrx and/or ati driver. It seems this is no longer a problem for me with the current dapper upgrads.

Well then, perhaps this is not the same bug as 27919, as I certainly still am having the problem. I have been keeping on top of dapper's updates, so unless the problem was solved e.g. yesterday...

When did the problem go away for you, Lakin?

Some weeks ago. I don't remember the last time I had the problem. In
fact, I don't remember this problem after my last clean install
(flight-4).

I suppose you have different video drivers and configurations and we should close one of the bugs as duplicate.

I have confirmed that bug #27919 is (almost certainly) related to the xorg "nv" driver. And, now that I think about it, this bug does not sound like the one I experienced (#27919).

Lakin, you said this problem went away for you. Is it ok to close this bug, then?

Yes, I'm closing it now. I've been waiting to find out if you guys indeed were experiencing the same thing or not.

I sincerely apologize for this comment. I tried out centerim recently and

Once again, I am very sorry this occurred.
