Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

I upgraded my laptop from hardy to intrepid and the ATI video
driver fails to load and I have low resolution.

It appears the ATI driver distributed with intrepid is not compatible.

Can you help? I am out of ideas.

Details follow.

I have a Sony laptop with an ATI video card. In hardy, it was
recognized as:

ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon Mobility M6 LY [Radeon Mobility 9000]

I upgraded to intrepid from hardy; rebooting then failed to load the
driver properly and went into failsafe mode and presented a low
resolution (800x600) display. The xorg.conf.failsafe file has the
entry:
     Section "Device"
     Identifier "Configured Video Device"
     Driver "vesa"
     EndSection

and the Xorg.0.log file shows that this driver is loaded:

     (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
     (II) Module dri: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
     compiled for 7.4.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 1.1
     (II) Loading extension XFree86-DRI
     (II) LoadModule: "vesa"

     (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//vesa_drv.so
     (II) Module vesa: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
     compiled for 1.5.0, module version = 1.3.0
     Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 4.1

But the following two drivers are available on the system after the
upgrade:

     /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ati_drv.so
     /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so

I assume the load on the ati_drv.so failed and that led to the vesa
driver being loaded. Here's the package information.
