Bug Description

Hi,

After an dist-upgrade to Dapper, my wifi card is gone.
In the network config only my other network card and a dialup is shown.

The network card is not set as eth0 wich was my wifi card before the upgrade.

If I try to bring up eth1 i get a device not found error, see output below:

root@inspiron:~/source/gnucash# ifup eth1
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; No such device.

eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
Bind socket to interface: No such device
Failed to bring up eth1.
root@inspiron:~/source/gnucash#

Please advice me howto supply more info to track this one.

Also if i try to switch it off & on again with the "fn" + "wifi" button wich turns on & off the wifi & the bluetooth device, the /var/log/messages gives the following output:

Jan 23 12:00:49 localhost kernel: [4344041.938000] atkbd.c: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0x88 on isa0060/serio0).

Jan 23 12:01:02 localhost kernel: [4344054.958000] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5

I guess that it should not have anything to do with USB??!?

The system is a fully updated Dapper at the time of writing, I tryed both with my old breezy kernel & the new wich came with dapper.

The system is a Dell Inspiron 9300, with a Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG MiniPCI adapter using the ipw2200 driver. The info about the card is shown in the device manager.

Could be that bug #31188 is the real issue, I have errors looking very similar to those.

The card works now, and it was not that bug that was the issue. After some days, using the old network card, it started show up in the network manager.

But it's still buggy, since Ubuntu most of the time for some reason is activating my other network card at boot, so everytime I get loggen in I either have to:
1. Open network manager, and deactivate, and then activate again the wireless to get a connection.
2. Deactivate the other network card, and then activate the wifi card.

The times when it activates the wrong card, I also have to switch the network monitior in the tray.

Changed status again, since it seems like there is still some failures in this wifi bug.... (Wich Ubuntu could be better on Wifi, since i also have 2 other computers with wifi wich doesn't work..)

im having the same problem and its driving me nuts!

i think whats part of the problem seems to be that when you do the dist-upgrade grub doesnt add in the .26 kernel , but installs all the restricted drivers for said kernel and FUBAR!

im testing this theory now

but how does one roll back from a dist upgrade?

ok after dist-upgrade i ran
update-grub
rebooted
and selected the .26 kernel, and wifi is good to go

Closing the bug since it seems it is now working for the reporter and others. zealubuntu, if you still have problems, provide more info, like /etc/network/interfaces and output from "iwconfig" and what kind of network card you have.
