Bug Description

During the installation of Ubuntu 8.10, either by upgrade or fresh installation, the software attempts automatically to identify the graphics card and monitor. In some instances it fails to do so correctly. Under previous versions of Ubuntu it was possible to use 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' or 'displayconfig-gtk' to input the correct configuration data. In 8.10 the former method is entirely automatic and does not allow user input and the latter method has been removed. I have identified that copying a valid xorg.conf from a 8.04 system to 8.10 works and resolves the display issues. I have also installed guidance-backends and displayconfig-gtk from 8.04 on 8.10; they appear to function correctly and enable the necessary use input.
