Bug Description

I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid on my Sony Vaio VGN T250P and am experiencing the following serious problems:

1) The screen brightness dims by itself and gets progressively darker and darker sometimes to almost unreadable levels of dimming.
2)Then I try to use the Fn + F6 key combination to increase screen brightness but the applet takes a long time to show up and respond to the key command. Eventually it shows up but then the dimming problem occurs again after a short while.

A workaround I found is to disable "Dim display when idle" (under both AC and battery) in System > Preferences > Power Management.

I confirm this bug on my VAIO VGN C1S/H: screen brightness dims down by itself and power manager has a slow startup on system start.

I observe exactly this phenomenon on my IBM X41 laptop with Intel i915gm graphics.

I will try Mr. Borggren-Franck's workaround, but a real solution would be great.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 9.04? Thanks in advance.

I've enabled dim on both AC and battery and I this doesn't seem to reproduce on Jaunty.
