Bug Description
Binary package hint: pidgin
Running pidgin under Kubuntu 8.04 upgraded to latest release as of 1st November causes pidgin to silently lock up. If run from the command line, no errors are displayed. No window is shown, and no icon is displayed in the system tray, though a space is made for it. Terminating with ^C causes the space in the system tray to go away.
I have removed the .gaim directory.
If I remove the .purple directory, I can run pidgin again. This is not an idea solution, as all my account details are then obviously lost.
I'm running
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04
Linux kereru 2.6.24-21-generic #1 SMP Tue Oct 21 23:43:45 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
pidgin 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1
on a 2.0GHz Turion with 1600MiB free according to htop. No swap used, ample disk space.
Output of "pidgin -d" is attached.

The problem appears to go away if I edit .purple/prefs.xml and remove the
<item value=' /usr/lib/ pidgin/ gevolution. so'/>
line. dpkg -S reports this file to be part of the pidgin package.
