does clicking on a html link done by:

 mailto:<email address hidden>

open your email client?

Also try to disable your extensions.

Disabling all extensions still leaves send link dysfunctional

SOLVED: This problem has been resolved by resetting "mailto" from "default" to "use Thunderbird" under Firefox preferences

I set it in Firefox/edit/preferences/applications/mailto

It was already set Thunderbird but then I choose "use other" and
tunneled in to (usr/bin) I think, to find an executable.

I got this hint from "Ubuntu Forums" some time ago so memory fades.

do you have firefox gnome-support package installed? if so, it will use
the mailto handler configured in gnome preferences -> preferred
applications.

you shouldnt need that manual mailto thing if are using -gnome-support
package ... try to reset that setting and ensure that you have tbird
confiured in gnomes preferred applications dialog

in that way it works for me to send links.
