Bug Description

When I opened Skype, it will have an icon in the system tray. However, when it did this it caused a graphic error. See screenshot.

I'm using Xubuntu 8.10 32bit, with all updates installed (at time of writing), Xfce 4.4.2 and Skype 2.0.0.72.

Note: I did put xfce4-systray as the package, but it came up with this error when i tried posting this bug report, "xfce4-systray" does not exist in Ubuntu. Please choose a different package. If you're unsure, please select "I don't know"

Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to improve Xubuntu! Could you describe or attach a screenshot of what you should see? Not using Skype, I don't know what to look for. Is it the lines in the fourth icon that is in question or is there something else?

Yes it is the lines. As you can clearly see on the screenshot. It only happens with skype.

I am confirming this bug. There should be enough information for the developers to begin working on it. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better and thanks for your patience. Sometimes it is difficult to know what the issues are if you have not seen them before.

remark: i suspect that the issue might not be with the xfce panel, but with skype. and skype is not an ubuntu package (chewit: did you install from medibuntu, or from the skype website?)

in that case there's not much the developers can do...

I installed Skype via the skype website. I used the Ubuntu deb file provided by skype to install it.

just wanted to confirm this bug as well. also i'd like to add that this only happens (at least with me) when i switch on any kind of compositor (both xfce-builtin or compiz) and only in combination with the skype-trayicon (no probs with any other apps).

sometimes it helps to restart skype to temporarily fix the bug.
(but as mentioned, it only happens with a compositor switched on.)

I don't have compositor or compiz enabled on my computer, but the bug still happens. I have tried restarting Skype, but I get the same issue.

I have just started up Skype, this morning. The Bug is gone! I'm not having the graphic bug with the skype logo in the system tray.

This maybe down to updates I have installed for Xubuntu in the past two days. Can anyone confirm that by updating your computer, the bug goes.

why don't you check which packages were recently updated? (gui: synaptic -> history)

tbh i can't even remember getting a relevant xfce-related update in the last year...

I'm not able to reproduce this issue on Xfce 4.6 with the xfce compositor enabled and skype. Could someone retest too and confirm? Thanks!

No more input, so I guess this was fixed in Xfce 4.6.

hi, sorry to step in at this point, but i'm not really sure the bug has been fixed. at least under some circumstances i can reproduce the bug in xfce 4.6 (xubuntu 9.04) with xfce-compositor switched on (but i tested the howto below without compositor too with the same outcome).

how to:
1. start skype
2. change theme (to a theme with a different panel background)
3. voila, there's the corruption again

Please leave a comment as to why you change the status of bugs. This bug was confirmed, and will be resolved in Xfce 4.8. Why is it invalid today?

I am closing a bug which is over a year old.

Please don't close bugs just because of age. Sometimes it just takes a longer time to get them fixed, but closing it because it is over a year old will only result in someone else filing a new bug, requiring the same actions be taken for that bug.

There is no criteria anywhere that says a bug can not remain open for as long as it takes to get it fixed. For example, bug #1 has been open since Ubuntu was started. For more information about bug triage, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpingWithBugs and ask on Freenode IRC #ubuntu-bugsquad.
