Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10. The input text field of firefox is too wide/long. And the dialogs and buttons of Eclipse have the same problem. Please see the attached screenshots.

I searched around on web, and somebody said that it should be a problem of cairo.. I know very little of cairo, so I have to file a bug here.

richard, we suspect this might be a locale-related issue. can you please type in a terminal "LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 firefox" and then visit the google site again? thank you

This is definately a locale problem. I can recreate this by running "LC_ALL=zh_CN.UTF-8 eclipse". I don't see the problem with English locale. Now we have to try and decide which is the correct package to assign to :/

Dimitrios, Chris,

Thanks for your comments. Actually I knew this workaround, but I'm a Chinese and I need to use my computer in Chinese language. A lot of people also reported the same problem in a Ubuntu Chinese Forum (forum.ubuntu.org.cn), all of us are expecting a fix for this.

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for confirming this problem... But it's not appropriate to mark it as low important, it's not a minor problem. Many Chinese users are switching back to 8.04 or another OS because of this bug. Could you raise its priority level?

Hi Richard,

Whilst I appreciate that the bug might not be low importance from your perspective, it is the correct importance for this bug. Cosmetic issues which do not affect the functionality of the application are low importance. Please have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance for general guidelines for setting bug importance.

This bug does not meet the criteria to be set to anything higher than low importance
