Bug Description

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

The vboxvideo driver from virtualbox-ose-guest-utils version 2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu1 in intrepid does not work with xserver-xorg version 1:7.4~5ubuntu3 (the Xserver says "module ABI major version (2) doesn't match the server's version (4)", then unloads the module and exits with "No drivers available. [...] no screens found"

The attached patch for the virtualbox-ose source package fixes the problem for me.

This bug was fixed in the package virtualbox-ose - 2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu2

---------------
virtualbox-ose (2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu2) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Upload as non-native package. (Discussion at LP: #288957)
  * Do not recommend non-existant package virtualbox-ose-guest-modules,
    recommend virtualbox-ose-guest-source instead (for DKMS)
    (LP: #293237)
    - debian/control
  * virtualbox-ose-guest-utils: Install vboxvideo_drv_15.so instead
    of vboxvideo_drv_14.so. Thanks for the patch, packet.
    (LP: #292856)
    - debian/rules
  * Remove vboxdrv init script and set LOAD_VBOXDRV_MODULE=1 instead,
    to trigger kernel module loading in virtualbox-ose init script
    (LP: #293109)
    - debian/virtualbox-ose.preinst added
    - debian/virtualbox-ose.vboxdrv.init.in removed
    - debian/virtualbox-ose.default
    - debian/patches/09-initscript.dpatch:
      - Re-add parts from Debian to handle LOAD_VBOXDRV_MODULE
      - Make "restart" and "force-reload" call "stop"/"start",
        not stop_networt/start_network only
      - Add info about kernel module to "status"
    - debian/rules
    - debian/virtualbox-ose-source.postinst: call "virtualbox-ose restart",
      depending on LOAD_VBOXDRV_MODULE
  * Refer to virtualbox-ose-source in error messages
    - debian/patches/04-vboxdrv-references.dpatch updated
  * Fix indent for reference to virtualbox-ose-source in
    - debian/virtualbox-ose.files/VBox.sh
  * virtualbox-ose Conflicts, Replaces, Provides: virtualbox-2.0
    - debian/control

I've added a bug task for Intrepid.
This has to go through http://wiki.ubuntu.com/SRU for Intrepid.
I'm subscribing motu-sru and propose to get the current version from Jaunty into Intrepid, which fixes other bugs as well, plus minor cleanup / not reported bugs.

Proposed debdiff is available at: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19548373/virtualbox-ose_2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu1_2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu2.diff.gz (version would be 2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu1.1 with pocket intrepid-proposed, of course).

Daniel's package for Intrepid worked for me, but still the script /usr/share/virtualbox/x11config.pl doesn't add the correct driver into xorg.conf that I added manually.

I'm marking this for intrepid-updates (so I can remember what is important for a vbox SRU).
If motu-sru should disagree, please set back.

I'm having this problem with Jaunty Alpha2 in the non-free version of VirtualBox. Is this something that we cannot fix for Jaunty, as we cannot get at that source code?

Just tried to install the guest-utils on Jaunty.

It says I have to remove:
ubuntu-desktop
xorg
xserver-xorg etc...

clearly this shouldn't happen?
