Bug Description

I had Xubuntu 8.04 running on my computer when I decided to upgrade to the new 8.10. I followed the instructions on the Ubuntu site, installing all other updates first. The upgrade seemed to complete without errors, but when I boot the machine, the login screen doesn't show up. Instead only the "x" cursor shows up in the middle of the screen (one time changing to a clock or something and then staying in that state), but it does not respond to the mouse, seemingly locked.

Thank you for your bug report. Is this issue present when booting the LiveCD? Could you try the Xubuntu Desktop CD, which is the live cd? Also, could you please boot up in single-user-mode ("recovery mode" from GRUB) and select "Fix X" (or something similar) and see if this solves your issue?

Do you have any proprietary drivers installed?

What video card do you have? You can use lspci -vvn in a terminal or in Ctrl+Alt+F2 to find out. Ctrl+Alt+F7 gets you back to the graphical login/desktop screen.

Thanks for helping.

Way too late. That installation is gone now.

If I remember correctly:
LiveCD worked.
I did not try "fix x" or anything similar.
I was running proprietary drivers from nvidia. I tried to deactivate them by doing an xorg reset from recovery mode.
GeForce FX 5200.

I am sorry to not be able to help more.
