Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

System: Ubuntu 8.10, Synaptic 0.62.1ubuntu10

Issue: Explicit sorting is lost when a package is marked.

:: HOW TO REPRODUCE ::
- launch Synaptic
- enter a keyword in the quick search box (e.g synap)
- sort by a column (e.g Package)
- Mark the first package for installation (or unmark)

Result:
Sort criteria are lost and package list is resorted

:: LATEST AFFECTED VERSION ::
synaptic:
  Installed: 0.63.1ubuntu1

If one is interested in marking related packages that have the same Package (name) prefix, it's convenient to sort by Package and click down the list. A workaround is to select (highlight) package rows with control-click, then mark the selected packages at once, e.g., with Package > Mark for Installation (or C-I, or button-3 clicking).

This problem is more complex than my steps to reproduce above -- it is triggered only when there's text in the quick search box. I apologize for the erroneous report. Please try this:
- launch Synaptic
- enter "c-cran" in Quick search
- sort by Supported
- select treeviewx
- sort criteria are lost and package list is resorted

I can confirm this problem.
This also applies to selecting packages for removal.

It is as if the default sort order (A-Z by Package Name) only applies when not searching and searching uses it's own sorting order.

I suspect that the search module is not sending the search results through any sorting routines and is instead returning things in the order in which they are found.

Everything is confirmed for version 0.61.2ubuntu10 (the one I am running on Intrepid):

1. There seems to be no default column sorting.
2. There seems to be no setting for such a thing.
3. The sorting gets lost only when some text is in the "Quick search" field.

Was about to report this myself, so I'll chime in and say I can confirm it too for version 9.04 (x86).

Happened since Intrepid I believe. Seems odd it would regress across 2 distros. 9.04 x86 as well

synaptic v0.62.5 shows the same UGLY bug in Ububtu 9.04, at least for x86_64.

I wonder if really nobody uses synaptic anymore, or why is this one of the bugs still being unhandled ...
