edited by tiax, original report: Not much else to add - see screenshot.

The default borders only leave a 47 characters wide workspace.

I'm not sure it's a bug. The default settings for PyRoom leave a "45% of your screen width" for your workspace. I insist on the fact that it's 45%, whatever your screen resolution is. If you have a 1920px wide screen, 45% may represent a lot of characters...

But you may be aware that you can absolutely change this width in the parameter dialog, and adjust it to your screen width in a snap.

Shall I mark this bug as "won't fix" ?

I still think that pyroom should be doing better by default. Maybe make the screen at least 80 characters wide if possible and only apply the "width" after that. The current settings leave a terrible first impression for people who are running pyroom on their 800x600 1st gen netbooks.

Could the width- and height fields be changed to % values? It wasn't at all clear to me that those numbers meant "45%" at all - plus pushing the up/down arrow for longer than a click gets you numbers above 1 very fast.

I'm not sure if gtk.TextView() provides a sensible way to set its width based on character count

but I changed the preferences UI to make it clear the user is dealing with percentages
exceeding 1 (100%) has been fixed in #263046
