Bug Description

Been using a HP Deskjet 5440 flawlessly with two different Ubuntu laptops since Feisty. Under Ibex, it will print one line of random characters, spit out the page, and attempt to print more of the same on subsequent pages.

Ibex correctly detects the printer (connected to an AirPort Express) and offers the correct driver (HP Deskjet 5400 series). Printing a test page or any document results in the above outcome. Manually configuring the printer (HP Jet Direct) with the correct URI results in the same outcome. Attempting to set up the printer directly via USB and printing a test page results in the same outcome.

Printing a test page from an Ibex live CD results in the same outcome. However, if I boot from a Hardy live CD, printing a test page results in the desired outcome.

Hardware:
ThinkPad R61i
PowerBook G4 (Feisty)

Attached is my syslog.

Downloaded and installed HPLIP 2.8.9 and it solves my printing issue.

I also have a HP 5440 Printer, Laptop is an Asus Z9200va (A6va).
Same Problem here. No Problem with Ubuntu 8.04 or 7.*, but in 8.10, only pages with random characters are printed.
Printer is attached via USB and is recognised correctly.

Aaron, was there any fix done on HPLIP regarding the device class of the HP DeskJet 5440? Can you post a patch for 2.8.7 which contains only this fix, so that we can make an update for Intrepid?

In Jaunty this should be fixed, as there we are on HPLIP 2.8.10 already.

I have the same bug, i'm printing using samba via hp 5440 connected to my main pc, which is running windows xp. On my laptop, i run Linux Mint Felicia (6) that is Ubuntu 8.10. Until LM Elyssa (ubuntu 8.04) i was printing ok. Now, i have this problem. Trying to Install hplip 2.8.12, i get an error on make stage (error code 2...), so i can't install the update.

My system is:
Fujitsu Siemens Laptop (Esprimo 5505)
(Intel Centrino Core2Duo 1,5GHz T5250, 2 GB Ram 667, 160 GB HD)

Linux Mint Felicia (ubuntu 8.10)
Thanks
Nikos
