Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-session

For years, I've always set up Alt-F1..Alt-F9 as shortcuts for Switch to workspace 1..9, and Shift-Alt-F1..Shift-Alt-F9 as shortcuts for Move window to workspace 1..9.

When running compiz, the Shift-Alt-Fn shortcuts don't work: I can enter them into Preferences|Keyboard Shortcuts and they show up correctly there, but when I attempt to use them, nothing happens.

This happens to me too. I'm using Jaunty:

gnome-session: 2.25.92-0ubuntu2
compiz: 1:0.8.2-0ubuntu2

It's very easy to reproduce. It doesn't matter what the "switch to workspace" keys are set to, the "move window to workspace" keys never work. If I'm in a terminal, the key goes to the terminal instead of being caught by the window manager.

summary: - Alt-Shift-Fn keyboard shortcuts do not work with compiz
+ Move window to workspace shortcuts not working

Note that the move window to workspace shortcuts work if I turn off compiz.

Happens to me still in 12.10 with the native "Move window to workspace X" shortcuts: they have no effect. Since the corresponding functionality in the Compiz Put plugin is bugged (always sends the window to the first workspace a window was sent to during the session), there's no way of doing this. Disabling Put makes no difference. I need Compiz for a number of things, so turning it off is not really an option.

@j-a-o, bryan-larsen and all others affected by this:

You can use the "Cube" and "Rotate Cube" plugins as workaround until this is fixed.

In the "Rotate Cube" plugin, "Bindings" tab you can set up shortcuts for "rotating to cube face X" and also for "rotating to cube face X with window".

Those work perfectly.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. The compiz program that we currently use in Ubuntu is a C++ re-write of the original compiz and was announced the 4th July 2010. Therefore, the bugs that were reported before that date, will be marked as "Won't Fix" as they probably exist in the original program which is not stored in launchpad. (The last LTS that used the old compiz is the 10.04 which is not supported anymore).
