Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

Bzflag fonts degrade soon after the program begins to run. Instead of letters, random noise is displayed. Workaround: switch off desktop effects in control panel.

This happens with libkwineffects 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu12. Computer: Akoya Medion Mini (MSI wind clone) with Intel 945GME integrated graphics card.

In my opinion KWin should somehow detect if a fullscreen 3D application is executed and deactivate desktop effects automatically.

Anyway, please try to get a screenshot of the problem, I can't really imagine how this issue would look like. Thank you.

Also did you ever use Compiz? If so, did you experience similar issues?

No, I haven't used compiz. Only KDE4 desktop effects because they came by default with Intrepid Kubuntu.

Could you attach a copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and you /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Thanks.

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:

Dear Bryce,

right now, I don't want to test experimental packages in my system because at
present it works and I'm afraid they could break it. I know by experience
that updates are a delicate point in linux distributions.

For this reason, I tried Jaunty alpha-2 on the akoya medion mini (msi wind
clone). Unfortunately, there was no 3D acceleration at all, even though the
logs showed no errors related to the DRI module.

Therefore, I will wait for a more mature version of Jaunty. I hope the bug is
still open by then. Otherwise, I will file it again.

Anyway, thank you very much for your effort!

Yours,

J.

Thanks for testing it; we'll leave it open for a while and hopefully by alpha-3 or -4 we'll have newer bits that eliminate the 3D issue.

We've released beta, and especially with fixes since then, things are stabilizing nicely, so now would be a good time to test if you wish to see this looked at.
