Disabling desktop effects places all windows on the first workspace

Bug Description

I am usually using GNOME and compiz with many virtual desktops/workspaces and many windows. However, to work around some compiz buggyness with OpenGL apps, I sometimes need to switch from compiz to metacity. To do this, I use gnome-appearance-properties. Unfortunately, when I switch from compiz to metacity, all windows are moved to the first workspace, which is a terrible mess.

Package: gnome-control-center
Version: 1:2.24.0.1-0ubuntu7

This is not fixable. Compiz uses workspaces and metacity uses viewport, you cannot translate between the two on WM switch.

Err, that should be compiz uses viewports and metacity uses workspaces.
