Theme schemas corrupted or missing

I'm running a current Dapper on AMD64. Since a week or so, no icons appear in the gnome panel menus, only text. I thought I'd try a different theme to see if that corrected the problem, but running gnome-theme-manager only gets me a dialog box saying

The default theme schemas could not be found on your system. This means that you probably don't have metacity installed, or that your gconf is configured incorrectly.

I have reinstalled the following packages, but that didn't help:

Thanks for your bug. Could you run "gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme /apps/metacity/general/theme /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme" and copy that to a comment?

Well, I now have a working system again. I saw a note on the web that someone had the same problem and that installing gnome-desktop helped them. I didn't have gnome-desktop installed and didn't want to install all of the packages in there so I removed the most unlikely candidates and then installed the list below. Afterwards, my gnome menus and themes started working again. Maybe there's a missing dependency somewhere?

Also, running "gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme /apps/metacity/general/theme /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme " outputs

Not of those packages are likely to do a difference on that, the schemas are from metacity and libgnome. Since it's fixed for you know I'm closing the bug, it looks like a local issue on your installation and since it's fixed we don't have details on what was wrong

My theme was also ruined, but that was fixed by removing metacity completely and reinstalling it.

The applets on the panel were also messed up at the same time - the window list applet had disappeared and would not get added back. Had to do a re-install of gnome-panel and gnome-applets to get it back.

Also, gnome-terminal behaviour changed - it's now having a yellow background instead of white, not having the menu bar anymore.

To add to all this, I'm unable to run any apps from the menu, as when I enter the user password I get a dialog saying: "Failed to run disks-admin as user root:
 Wrong password." - it happens for all apps under System->Admin menu. If I run it from terminal using sudo, it works fine. Not sure if it's a different bug, so pls. let me know and I'll fine a seperate report.

All these things started happening at the same time suddenly, which is why I think they might be related.

I'm currently running the final Dapper release. Started having the issue suddenly one day (I was running Flight 7 then). It was fine the day before, but started acting strange on the next day.

In a nutshell, it seems a whole lot of my settings got messed suddenly.

Ok, I've fixed the problem for myself, but probably not the bug itself.

After a bit of googling, I found that some others were also having the same problem with GNOME. Running this command fixed the issue to an extent:

$ sudo gconf-schemas --register desktop_gnome_interface.schemas

The interface schemas were indeed missing, and that fixed the icons issue. I was also unable to launch the Theme manager before that, now I can.

I also found out that re-installing the package "libgnome2-common" would make things work, so I did that and it all seems to be fine.

Guess I'll close this bug for now, though it might happen to others in future - who knows ;-)

looks like sometime schemas don't get register correctly but that's not really likely to be a bug of the package shipping the schemas, either due to gconf or to something not going as expected on the machine during the installation

This has recurred for me in feisty beta. I have ubuntu-desktop and it's dependencies installed and up to date. Could this be related to bug 102726?

Removing and then reinstalling ubuntu-desktop and metacity seem to have fixed this, though not bug 102726. I think the bug still stands though.

Well, since the last update this morning (update-manager and update-manager-core) I'm also having problems with the Theme manager. 4 Times today, after reboot, I say that the windows where changed (no more borders), that the workspaces were gone (??), and that the screen had somehow moved up. All windows opened with the window top bar laying over the top panel so you couldn't reach the panel no more, unless you closed that window.

I don't know how to work around this, so each time I reinstalled an image backup of my Home partition.

Can somebody fix this please?

I think you can fix this by going to Synaptic and choosing to
reinstall all the gnome packages that you currently have installed.

Forgot to tell (3) I'm not using a clean installed Feisty; it is upgraded from a Edgy installation. I'll make a clean install once the official Feisty is available.

I'm getting tired of this. I lost all my window borders again for the XXXXX time. But... I might have a clue now why, or better, when it happens. I'm not really certain, but I believe it happens when I occidentally log out or close down when there are still some windows open.
Also, it does not seem that it has anything to do what is installed, because replacing the /home directory with a backup fixes the problem. Though I would like to hear a solution which does not involve replacing the /home directory with a backed up one.

can you try to run `sudo update-gconf-defaults` and move your ~/.gconf* ~/.gnome* ~/.nautilus ~/.metacity to a backup location?
also if this is a case of missing icons, you can try to refresh your icon database by doing

for i in /usr/share/icons/*;
do sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f $i;
done
