Are there bugfixes or other useful reasons to update this? I'd like to get it in, but a freeze exception needs to be justified.

Hi, thanks for looking at this. Yes, many bugfixes, a year's worth. Also an important simplification of the skin (no more full/simple/minimal); and support for the current Plone 2.1 line, which many users need. Also better wiki-spam protection, less noise for email subscribers and many more translations.

In case it's not clear, a new stable release is made on the first of each month. http://zwiki.org/ReleaseNotes has full details.

As of today I'd recommend Zwiki 0.51.0 2006/03/02 as the best release. Unfortunately it has http://zwiki.org/1222051FailsToInitialiseWithZope27 which means users of old Zope 2.7 would have to upgrade or apply a workaround. I don't know if this matters for dapper.

0.52 will be out in a few days and includes two more useful fixes: http://zwiki.org/818PagesWithManyFreeformLinksRenderSlowly and http://zwiki.org/1224RestructuredtextHeadingsWereTooSmall . It also has some possibly disruptive changes and will need some testing.

If you request it I'll make a 0.51.1 release with just the three bugfixes mentioned above.

Waiting for 0.52 for dapper may be a good idea then, if you feel it'll be stable enough. Since release date isn't until June now, we've got a few more weeks for bugfixes. Hopefully we'll also see zope 2.9 in universe in that time, if possible. Thanks for the info on zope-zwiki.

That is good news, we'll do our best to make 0.52 extra solid.

The changelog and the diffstat indicate really large changes to the source, many additional features and lots of bugfixes. Our Freeze policy doesn't accept these kind of changes at this point in our release cycle.

However, if you provide test packages and test installation, and could give some sort of experience report, so that we can be confident that our users will be more happy with the new version 0.52 than with what we currently have (0.38), then I'm inclined to agree. Currently, I'm not convinced that this update is a good idea (but feel free to convince me)

I hear that concern (and shared it). As we have limited resources for testing against the various zope pieces, versions and environments, I decided to focus on making 0.52 solid; it has received more testing than 0.38+patches would have. Some issues have been flushed out and the 0.52.1 bugfix release coming this weekend will be the one I would pick if I had to live with one or the other (especially if, as I hope, we'll have a few more days to confirm its goodness). I'll also make a best-effort 0.38.1 release, so the final choice will be yours. I didn't want to test the ubuntu release guidelines, it's just that we got unexpectedly noticed at the last minute, also coinciding with major refactoring and a couple of less-good recent releases on our side. Thanks!

thank you for your comments on that. ajmitch, as our zope master, whats your opinion on this?

what do the others think?

I've released 0.52.1, a bugfix release. http://zwiki.org/ReleaseNotes has details.

This is the code that runs http://zwiki.org, http://zopewiki.org, http://plone.demo.zwiki.org, and the rest of the http://joyful.com wiki farm, which collectively have plenty of visitors and daily activity. I feel confident dapper users would have a better experience with 0.52.1 than with 0.38(.1). As for test packages, I don't know who could make them - Andrew ?

I'm very undecided, but I tend to agree that the newer version might be better for our users. ajmitch, I really want to hear your opinion on this

Seeing as I put it to the UVF team, it's fairly clear that in my opinion, this is a good thing to get in, and I'd update the packages for ubuntu & offer them to the debian maintainer as well. Getting a bugfixed 0.52.1 in would cause less hassle than keeping 0.38 around, for both us & upstream.

Sorry for the delay, I'm waiting for the other zope bits to be installable & usable for testing. Currently the zope syncs from Debian are waiting to be processed.
