I had no sound recently in intrepid. I thought my sound was muted as has happened before so I opened a terminal and run alsamixer, however, it only showed the master volume control instead of all the others that usually exist. I found on ubuntuforums that now to see all the other volume control you need to enter 'alsamixer -Dhw' and sure enough I found that my PCM volume was muted. I may be way off base here but its worth a shot.

I have the same trouble on my dell 1525, also with 82801H soundcard, as I updated to Ubuntu intrepid. I ran alsamixer and there was a loud noise when I turned on the Analog loopback.

On hardy heron I had a similar problem: there was no sound after upgrading modules, but in that case the system didn't recognise the soundcard. I found the solution here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=948528&highlight=lost+sound+dell+1525
(on Gaudentius post)
However, now it ain't possible to follow directions, because there is no old modem driver.

I did the following and got sound:

sudo killall pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload

System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA

Nonetheless, I have to do it every time I turn on the computer.
