Bug Description

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

Ok this is my 1st bug. I will provide as much as i can
here is my dpkg.log is attached

upon performing sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose i recieve the following messages
...
Setting up virtualbox-ose (1.5.6-dfsg-6ubuntu1) ...
   * Starting VirtualBox host networking... [ OK ]
  * Starting VirtualBox kernel module vboxdrv
  * No suitable module for running kernel found. << ---- error in question

i ask for help on #ubuntu before i went to #ubuntu-bugs. <Sorry> I was advised to get the required modules from synaptic
package manager So i did

uname -r
2.6.24-21-generic

Once i downloaded the correct module i try to start virtualbox and recieve the following error

root@sigint-laptop:~# virtualbox
Could not find VirtualBox installation. Please reinstall.

You are using Ubuntu Hardy, correct?

Please try installing virtualbox-ose-modules-generic, which should always depend on the latest modules in Hardy.

Please note, that in Intrepid modules get build automatically, so you only need virtualbox-ose and virtualbox-ose-source.

If it still does not work, please provide the output of:
dpkg -l | grep virtualbox

Changed in virtualbox-ose:
status: New → Incomplete

I added the modeules to my VM, and it worked. However, i havent tried it on my laptop yet. My Laptop`s processor is AMD64 could that be the issue.

The modules should be available for amd64, too.
But AFAIK they are not in sync currently on Hardy. See bug 303199.
I tend to mark the bug as invalid, or rather as duplicate of the "modules should get installed automatically" bug.

"Could not find VirtualBox installation. Please reinstall." is another issue. Are you missing /etc/vbox.cfg? (I've seen another bug about this today)

I too have this problem. /etc/vbox.cfg is missing, even with a reinstall of virtualbox-ose, after doing a complete removal.
This is happening on Intrepid, fully updated.

I can confirm this (the missing vbox.cfg on intrepid).

I got into this situation after installing the proprietary version of virtualbox (which removes virtualbox-ose). After some time i decided to move back to virtualbox-ose and suddenly couldnt start VirtualBox anymore :D

I think the virtualbox package looks for .VirtualBox directories in the home directories. I renamed all those, installed virtualbox-ose again and voila the /etc/vbox.cfg shows up and virtualbox-ose is able to start.
