Bug Description

I just tried to install the Kubuntu 8.10 release candidate on a friend's computer, a Dell Inspiron 1100. But when I started the live CD, the computer froze during the login process: When the fourth symbol appeared (the one after the globe, maybe the window manager?) I could not even switch to tty any more.
The same issue appears with Ubuntu 8.10 Beta. I installed it successfully, but when I logged in, the computer froze with a black screen while loading Gnome: The mouse pointer was still there and movable, but the rest did not work: no switching to tty, no killing X... Same problem with failsafe Gnome, Xterminal session works, though. Login on tty works, as well.

I don't know, if xorg is the right package, but as it happens on Gnome and KDE... Any more information I can provide? Trying to recover the xorg0.log file would be possible, but will take me some time as it is not my computer.

Thanks for reporting this bug. /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old is needed to find out what can be wrong. Also, when the computer freezes, does Caps Lock still turn on and off the light on the keyboard? Since Xterminal sessions work, can you also upload the Xorg.0.log from one of those sessions?

A tip: If you want to file an X-related bug and make sure to get the right files uploaded without hassle, you can use the command
apport-cli -f --package xorg
or
apport-cli -f --package xserver-xorg-video-intel
to file directly against the intel driver.

Oh, with tty works, I mean, that when I am still in gdm, everything works but when logging in, the freeze does not allow me to do anything any more. This also happens with the live-CD. I had to install 8.04.1, as a working system was needed. But right now, I borrowed the computer again and I am installing 8.10.

Now I have not the same, but a similar problem: During installation of Kubuntu 8.10 RC, I get stuck when loading X: The x-shaped mousepointer appears, I can move it, but then nothing happens any more. Switching to tty works in this case, though.

Any more information I can provide? I could do an install with the alternate CD and then post the logs.

Maybe this is a dup of bug 221119? In this bug people also see '(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe A!'.

I don't think it is related to bug 221119, since it is on a 945GM chipset and you have a 845G. You can check out the other bugs that are tagged for 845G at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bugs?field.tag=845g . They have similar symptoms as you have, especially bug 284461.

When have you copied the Xorg.0.log you have uploaded? Is it from before X freezes? To catch any error messages that occurs just before the freeze, we would need Xorg.0.log from that session. When you reboot the computer and gdm starts again this is renamed to Xorg.0.log.old when the new file is created. Another file that would be useful is /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

The Xorg.0.log comes from the live-CD, _after_ X was frozen, but not the whole system so that I could recover the log.

Installing Kubuntu 8.10 in safe graphics mode now, I'll post the logs later.

Okay, with Driver "vesa", it works. Now I have two results on Kubuntu 8.10 RC:
The first one (xorg.0.log.old) with 'Driver "i810"' in xorg.conf resulted in a complete system crash on startup, I did not see kdm, tty does not work, no reaction to any key.
The second one (xorg.0.log) with no 'Driver' line in the xorg.conf showed up kdm, but when I logged in, the system crashed after the globe symbol appeard: I could still move the mouse pointer, but no reaction to any keys (including Caps Lock).

Dup of bug 259385 Removing compiz-wrapper resolved this.
