Bug Description

In some cases an upgrade from Hardy Heron KDE 4 Remix to Intrepid Ibex isn't done for all applications. This will happen if the package kubuntu-desktop was removed. We strongly advise to ensure kubuntu-desktop, and if KDE 4 is installed also kubuntu-kde4-desktop, is installed before upgrading.

Orig description:

Binary package hint: systemsettings

When you upgrade from Hardy with KDE4 to Intrepid with KDE4, "System settings ..." opens a blank window.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6038056 - me and one other person had this.

This happens to those who were on Hardy and installed KDE4 from the ppa. dist-upgrade to Intrepid works, but systemsettings is completely inaccessible.

The solution in the forum thread above is: apt-get install systemsettings - this removes systemsettings-kde4 and the resulting systemsettings can in fact be used.

The forum thread suggests: "shouldn't there be a dependency which installs the current systemsettings package even if the systemsettings-kde4 package is installed? This may cause problems for everyone who tried the kde4 packages in hardy."

kubuntu-desktop is taking care of this kind of stuff, by removing it you won't get complete upgrades.

So why just close it with an excuse rather than moving it there?

Add task for ubuntu-release-notes as discussed on IRC. While we can't do anything sensible about this, it probably makes sense to mention it in the release notes since remaining -kde4 applications are rendered useless in an intrepid environment (due to changed installation prefix and different application versions).

This might be addressed by a recent update in update-manager:

  * DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeQuirks.py:
    - when transitioning from kubuntu-kde4-desktop to kubuntu-desktop
consider key dependencies as well even if kubuntu-kde4-desktop
is no longer installed (LP: bug 277285)

Thanks for your bugreport.

If this is still a issue with the latest version of update-manager (that does the transition of kubuntu-kde4-desktop) then I would like to get the upgrade logs from /var/log/dist-upgrade/* to figure out what goes wrong. I do a test upgrade with kde4 now to see if I can reproduce anything.

Thanks,
 Michael

I added the text to the ubuntu release notes to make sure that people know about it (especially people upgrading using apt-get or aptitude). For other cases update-manager should be able to deal with it.

I suspect this mosty affects people running KDE4 on Hardy from ppa - but anyone running stuff from a ppa should be able to fix problems from the release notes.
