Bug Description

Binary package hint: zim

Preferably the user should be warned that dvipng is not installed if they try to use the Formula Plugin rather than getting a massive log file with no obvious indication of what's going wrong. Even a short and specific error message would be useful. This kind of thing really baffles people if they don't have a clue about possible problems.

At the very least dvipng should be listed as recommended in deb package.

Now an error message is shown when trying to open the equation editor without latex or dvipng installed.

The error message is an improvement, however I don't believe that a new user will know what to do right away. After all, "latex" is not a name of a package. A few more words, or better yet - a link to a help page with some instructions may make it clearer.

I agree, but it is difficult to have a detailed advise. Keep in mind that the actual package name and the actual latex implementation can vary between linux distributions. In fact some distributions allow you to choose from multiple implementations. Also I do not think an error message is the right place to include this info.

In the redesign I'm working on there will be more room for plugins to have their own preferences and information text in the menu where you enable them.
