Bug Description
serious networking problems (lags, stalls) with dell inspiron 640m
I just upgraded an inspiron 640m with intel wireless and broadcom ethernet from hardy to *intrepid rc1* today and ran into a lot of continuing network lag and stalls.
Here is the networking hardware:
0c:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection [8086:4222] (rev 02)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX [14e4:170c] (rev 02)
After upgrade completes, I get serious intermittent lag before the system transfers any serious amount of data on both wireless and wired connections. Sometimes pages load in a snap, other times I get 60 seconds of wait time before the page loads. These are pages like the new york times and launchpad that loaded like lightning 24/7 in hardy (half an hour ago).
Ping works almost immediately. SSH worked, but very slowly. Some webpages half load instantly, then stall. Others never load. The wifi light on the laptop blinks steadily on and off.
I found this thread as it mentions my model machine and wireless driver---> https:/
I noticed the folks in that thread all saw their problem with the wireless driver ceased after FTRACE was disabled in 2.6.27-7.12. My kernel on install of intrepid was 2.6.27-7.11, so I manually downloaded the 2.6.27-7.14 build and installed, rebooted.
Still roughly the same symptoms. Small transfers happen ok. Larger bits of data may take a dozen seconds to start. They run a full speed for a while, then stall.
*) same problem with multiple browsers... konqueror and firefox both stalling right now out loading the NYTimes. Slashdot came up instantly a second ago, now amazon is churning for 15 seconds. Now 45 seconds....
*) I'm sitting right next to the router with 99% signal strength
*) Also happens when ethernet is plugged in, can't tell if it's worse or better.
*) Mac mini running Debian sid sitting on the desk right here is loading everything instantly on the same internet connection. So very unlikely to be a problem with my link.
What files should I include? Thanks!
### UPDATE #### seems I am yet another victim of the tcp timestamps being enabled in 2.27 and the crappy routers that can't handle them. Please include the upstream patch before release, as this is going to be a debacle (30% of east coast customers are on verizon). ####
