Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

After running evolution to type an email, then composing a message, all the text in the main mail window is underlined red to show a spelling error, when in fact they are correct words.

Previous to Intrepid update, evolution checked spellings automatically.

On checking the preferences, Edit->Preferences->Composer Preferences-> Spell checking displays that English UK is enabled, but red lines still appear.

After closing this window, it seems that spell checking is now enabled again (despite settings not being manually changed).

This appears to only happen when initially setting up Evolution. When you actually make a change to your spelling preferences as kabads mentioned, you no longer have the issue. Attached is a screenshot of the issue.

Here is 'apt-cache showpkg evolution' output:

may someone having the issue forward it to bugzilla.gnome.org? for forwarding instructions please have a look to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME ; leaving this as incomplete until that, thanks.

I also experience this problem. When I begin to reply to a message, all words are underlined until I go to Edit->Current Languages in the email creation window and select a language. However, for me, this setting is not saved, as the next time I reply, I have to select the language again.

This seems to have occurred when I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10.

Thanks for looking into this.

After reading the comments more carefully above, I did go to Edit->Preferences->Composer Preferences and select a different language, clicked OK and closed Evolution, then restarted it and again went to Edit->Preferences->Composer Preferences and selected the language I wanted. This seemed to fix it permanently through subsequent restarts. Thank you to the above posters who took the time and effort to write this out.

I just upgraded Hardy -> Intrepid and came across this problem that every letter is deemed to be a misspelled word. It is very, very annoying. Very few Ubuntu users will see this as a quirk, they will see it as a disaster. Can I suggest this should be seen as a critical blocking bug to be fixed asap.

(Along with the disaster that is the neverending update of the cache files -- in the end I had to stop Evolution and delete the entire IMAP cache and start again.. This Evolution upgrade is a bit of a disaster.)
