Bug Description

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS section in the README for
(EE) NVIDIA(0): additional information.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!

When I have my TV tuner (HVR-1600) installed, I get the error above. When I remove it, I don't get the error above. It could be related to bug #238191 since both errors offer a conflict between Nvidia and tv tuner card.

GTA67 providied much needed information. And adding vmalloc=256M to grub menu.lst fixed the problem.

Please follow these steps:
1) turn on your computer (make sure that all your device i.e. lan, nvidia card, tv tuner, are enabled)
2) after you see the BIOS you will see the GRUB menu which contains a list of kernels that you can use to boot into Ubuntu. Select the 1st entry with your keyboard (do not press Enter) and press "e".
You will see 3 or 4 lines and you will have to select the 2nd line (i.e. the longest line) with your keyboard and press "e".

Get to the end of the line and add the pci=routeirq parameter so that the line will look similar to the following:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=UUID=756f974e-86b9-4ba1-b5b7-33dd59f616ce ro quiet splash pci=routeirq

Then press Enter and you will get back to the previous screen. Select the 2nd line again but this time press "b" and let Ubuntu boot.
3) If the parameter works for you I will give you further instructions on how you can make that parameter permanent.

Let me know how it goes.

You must have missed the part where I said "Can not provide more information due to removal of Intrepid and reinstall of Hardy. I consider Intrepid unusable until this bug is fixed."

Intrepid Ibex is no longer installed.

Can I try this grub command in Hardy? I do have similar issues. in Hardy, I can't have TV Tuner, Nvidia card w/ driver, and builtin ethernet enabled at the same time. I now use pci ethernet with disabled onboard ethernet

I will probably end up skipping Intrepid upgrade due to this bug. I can't use something that doesn't work.

I tried your suggestion for Hardy and it didn't work. See bug #238191 for details on the hardy bug. OpenSUSE sees my tv tuner as graphics card. and prevents me from enabling nvidia driver. Hardy screen goes blank at trying start X with nvidia driver enabled and I have onboard Ethernet enabled. And Intrepid fails to initialize nvidia device. I just have a gut feeling all three problems stem from same bug. And don't blame it on nvidia cuz it works on hardy with onboard ethernet is disabled.

I have the same errors with fresh install of 8.10 and Nvidia GeForce 6150. The pci=routeirq argument didn't help. I started a help thread here if you want to view the error logs: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1002287 I have seen several threads with the same trouble while looking for solutions. I'm still running Intrepid if you need anything else:-)

Well, I managed to fix mine. There is a conflict with the new cx18 module in 2.6.27 and the nvidia binary driver. The cx18 is the driver for Hauppauge TV tuner cards. I have a Hauppauge 1600, so it was being loaded at boot. See more here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6315676#post6315676

I spent HOURS working on this, doing all the various guides, uninstalling, reinstalling and purging everything more times than I can count. I tried using envy, using my old configs from before the upgrade and so many more things.

In the end I did a clean install (because there were many many hardware problems on the upgrade to intrepid and it worked flawlessly. I suspect anyone who has this problem has like me upgraded from 8.04 and possibly even earlier. Something from one of these previous versions is hanging around, causing problems, but I have no idea what.

The workaround / fix can be found here:

This is an issue caused by the combo of trying to load the cx18 and nividia drivers at the same time -- memory issues for which adding the vmalloc specification to GRUB for the kernel you're trying to load will do the trick.

Hi kahrytan,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 288626

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
