Bug Description

Since upgrading Hardy to Intrepid (Ubuntu 8.10,) I frequently (twice yesterday, once so far today) have entered a situation where scrolling in an application causes the machine to lock up for several seconds. The issue affects multiple programs - when it happens with firefox, the lockup lasts for between ten and thirty (10-30) seconds, when it's CCSM (Compiz config panel) five to fifteen (5-15.) Once the lockup ends, the window will have scrolled appropriately but trying to scroll again causes another lockup.

Restarting the programs in question does not help, although restarting X fixes the problem temporarily. Scrolling seems to work normally in all programs other than the one which is actively causing the freezing. This problem seemingly occurs randomly, and I don't have any method of reproducing the issue other than using the machine until it happens.

Update: The problem can (at least sometimes, currently investigating) be fixed by maximizing, then un-maximizing the affected window and (possibly additionally necessary) resizing it. Will continue to investigate.

Update 2: The problem seems only to occur while running windowed 3D windows games through Wine. The scroll lockups can be fixed by resizing the affected windows, but only after the wine app has been closed.

Hi cernunnos,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Done. Attached is the output you requested, along with xorg.conf and xorg.0.log.

Okay, a little more diagnostic information here.

Windows created prior to loading the Wine 3D app will scroll properly; windows created after the fact do not. Minimizing a window that was created first (and scrolls properly) and subsequently unminimizing it will cause the scroll-hangup issue to affect that window as well.

I have this problem... I'm not using Wine.

The main thing I notice when this happens (only in FF for me) is that one of my dual core CPUs runs at 100%, the other drops to about 5%. Both cores can run at 100%, it seems random.

Do you have a dual core?

I do indeed have a dualcore. The issue seems not to affect Debian Testing,
for the record.

I really think this is probably a duplicate of #71540

I assure you, it is not. It is only 3D apps, and has nothing to do with CPU frequency scaling.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
